MSTERA

There are four centers of lacquer miniature painting in Russia, which become a part of the world culture. They are Palekh, Fedoskino, Kholui, and Mstera. Each of these famous villages has its own, unique and recognizable style. Masters from Mstera, have passed on the traditions of icon painting from generation to generation, after the October Revolution of 1917 with its atheist ideology, began to paint papier-mâché boxes applying the same technology they used for centuries in iconography. Communist Russia made them change the material and subjects but nothing can change a strong and mysterious Russian soul. Mstera artists found their own new way in the creation of distinctive art in miniature. Mstera miniature has a subtle color scheme. Characteristic pale tones on an ivory-colored background are the main features of Mstera painting. Blue, silver, yellow and red paints prevail in the Mstera color spectrum. Mstera imagery is often drawn from songs, legends, and Russian fairy tales.
