History of Earrings

Egyptians would wear earrings to signify wealth and class. Earrings were once a predominately male jewelry choice, however, in ancient Rome, earrings were worn by slaves, and in ancient Greece by prostitutes. Those in Rome and Greece that were wealthy would also wear earrings set with pearls and other expensive stones to display their social status. The middle ages in Europe saw male earrings alternated between being popular and out of fashion.
Religion also influenced earring culture when the Catholic Church banned the piercing of ears stating that people cannot alter their bodies created in the image of God. It was then that earrings became popular amongst atheists, thieves, and pirates.
During the renaissance, many people deterred from the rules of the Church. Pierced ears would be used to acknowledge different events in life. Sometimes piercings present on the right ear of the only boy in the family or young boys of single mothers whose husband has been killed. Older men who wore earrings on both ears were the last of his family line and would therefore not be allowed to participate in times of war, for fear that his family name would disappear forever. This tradition has completely changed. Over time earrings have become less popular amongst men. On the other hand, earrings have become the new popular trend amongst women - transcending borders. Today, earrings have become a necessary accessory for women all over the world.
Women wear earrings for mostly decorative purposes. Many women choose to wear different types and shapes of earrings with the purpose of complementing their faces, the color of their eyes, and to match their outfit choices. For example, long earrings tend to elongate the face and neck whereas earrings that feature round and geometric shapes tend to sharpen these features. Colors play a great role.
