“The carriage rolled on into a dark forest. Like a blazing torch, it shone in the eyes of some robbers. They could not bear it.”

This hand painted lacquer box depicts the fifth story in the Hans Christian Anderson classic, The Snow Queen. This scene is from The Little Robber Girl, "That's gold, That's gold, the robbers cried. They sprang forward, seized the horses and dragged little Gerda out of the carriage.” The carriage is exquisitely done in gold leaf and all of the characters in this scene are alive with their devious plans to steal the gold. Even so, Gerda, the little wealthy girl feels sorry for the poor girl in tatters.  In the end, the robber girl is touched by Gerda’s kindness and her big heart, she gives her clothes back, food, and best wishes for her long journey. You will be touched by the magical quality that Palekh boxes bring to your favorite fairy tales. The box is hand made of papier-mâché, several layers of clear lacquer protect the painting. Signed by the artist and made in the village of Palexh.
